transatlantic correspondence with a docked sailortoday i realized
how difficult it must be
to stand trapped on the opposite end
of the sea of anger,

of distrust,
of bitterness,
of frigid honesty
that’s so often in my wake.

my atlantic ocean
goes on for eons upon eons —
even i have given up
on trying to see the shore beyond it.

i don’t feel sorry for stranding you
on the other side, though —
you’re the one that stranded me

so i sit on my marooner’s rock
of guilt and confusion
and laugh at you,
poor sailor,

laugh at you and wait
for you to get smart
and quit this journey
before you drown.

unrealistic
childish
naïve

they feel so good when you’re
